Hi there,

I was dishing out my weekly ration of pills into my pill box last night and noticed my Sulfasalazines looked different - instead of being lozenge shaped they're circular - on closer inspection it seems this is because they're not enteric coated. With the coated ones I've been fine - no nausea or anything but am now a little worried - hopefully nothing will happen but I just wondered if anyone else had switched from the coated to not coated ones and noticed a difference....?

Hi,
I was given them once, after having enteric coated ones. Didn't think anything of it, but was having trouble swallowing them. I got a new prescription early, and just enquired with the pharmacist if they were elongated ones or the rounds ones as I was experiencing difficulty swallowing the round ones. She said that I wasn't prescribed the round ones, but was the elongated enteric coated ones, and I have never received them again. It may be worth asking your pharmacist or GP what has been prescribed.
Hope this helps.
Take care
Candy

Hi!

Worth getting it checked because if they're not enteric coated you may need a separate stomach protector. I can't remember what else I took with Sulfasalazine, long time ago!

Worth asking your GP.I've always been on the round ones and had no problems- I wasn't aware there was any difference.

Thanks everyone. Well, so far so good - I haven;t felt any nausea at all but I think I will ask for the enteric coated ones next time around just becuase the shape of them makes them so much easier to swallow!! Will also check out the need for a stomach protector to go with this months supply - I hadn;t even thought about that!

I think this is happening more often these days. My chemist told me that they are pressured into prescribing generic drugs rather than the "brand" names, which are not always the same quality. People with epilepsy have been suffering terribly from this change and have launched a petition to get this stopped.
